New Jersey Law Enforcement Attorneys

Serving All 21 New Jersey Counties

Nobody can possibly understand the mindset of a police officer better than a former police officer.

That’s why Mr. Cushane’s prior career in law enforcement is so indispensable to the zealous, targeted approach that he brings to representing his fellow law-enforcement brethren, and to the unions to which they proudly belong.  Having worked for more than a decade in what has often been colloquially referred to as “The Greatest Show on Earth,” Mr. Cushane represents and defends police officers with a level of insight and authority that can only come from having worn the uniform himself.

Mr. Cushane’s law practice is passionately devoted to representing the interests of law enforcement officers and their unions throughout all 21 counties in New Jersey and at the federal level.

Contract negotiations.  Grievance arbitration.  Interest arbitration.  Unfair labor practices.  Internal affairs and disciplinary matters, both large and small.  In Mr. Cushane’s nearly two decades of representing thousands of active and retired police officers, state troopers, sheriff’s officers, correctional police officers, and plain-clothes investigators, he has practically seen and done it all.

Meet Thomas A. Cushane, Esquire

My staff and I are eager to serve as your trusted advocates—effectively, efficiently, and enthusiastically.

Why Choose Us?

As a former police officer, Mr. Cushane has a keener understanding and a more insightful perspective to the representation of police officers that other lawyers who lack a law-enforcement background cannot possibly have.  From the academy to retirement, our law firm understands the everyday problems and challenges that police officers face every day.

Before law school, Mr. Cushane served as a full-time police officer in New Jersey from 1993 to 2004, during which he served as a police-academy instructor, field-training officer, police-patrol-dog handler, and K-9 unit supervisor, where he was responsible for managing and directing the daily operations of his agency’s K-9 unit.

He also served for six years as his union’s president, during which he acted as an outspoken advocate on issues ranging from unlawful random drug testing procedures to the right to legal counsel during internal-affairs interrogations.  As General Counsel to the Fraternal Order of Police New Jersey Labor Council, Mr. Cushane was the primary attorney responsible for litigating the collective bargaining disputes of that organization’s 100-plus bargaining units statewide and its over 2,100 active police officers, sheriff’s officers, correctional police officers, and plain-clothes investigators.

Mr. Cushane is licensed to practice in all state and federal trial and appellate courts in New Jersey, in the federal Third Circuit, in the District of Columbia, and in the Supreme Court of the United States.

Mr. Cushane works closely with New Jersey’s largest law-enforcement organization:

In the spirit of that close cooperation, in 2006 Mr. Cushane urged desperately needed reforms to aspects of New Jersey’s police-internal-affairs and police-disciplinary processes, and drafted a six-part legislative blueprint designed to correct shortcomings in how allegations of police misconduct are investigated and adjudicated.  With the crucial support of the New Jersey State Policemen’s Benevolent Association and the New Jersey State Fraternal Order of Police, several of those suggested reforms eventually became law.

At the federal level under the Railway Labor Act, Mr. Cushane has the privilege of representing the hundreds of brave, dedicated, sworn Amtrak law enforcement officers who safeguard our nation’s vast network of passenger trains and railroads.
